Lotus Top Speed
With a top speed of 188 mph, the new 2020 Lotus Evora GT is the fastest model ever sold by the British sports car firm in North America. With an output of 422 horsepower, it is also the most powerful.
The new model replaces the outgoing Evora Sport 410 and Evora 400, and comes with a comprehensive number of updates throughout.
It is lighter for starters, by 71 pounds compared to the Evora 400, giving it a total mass of just 3,104 pounds. This is with the optional Carbon Pack fitted, which includes carbon fiber front access panel and a one-piece louvred tailgate with integrated spoiler and diffuser.
- The greatest Lotus road cars ever
Even the standard car has carbon fiber rear bumper, A-panels, rear wheel ducts and sill covers, though.
Much of the bodywork is aerodynamically functional as well. Compared to the Evora 400, it generates double the amount of downforce – as much as 140 pounds at higher speeds. Lotus reckons this makes it the benchmark car for its price point.
- Opinion: Why the future is bright for Lotus
Ah yes, price. It's yours for $96,950 (MSRP), and ordering is open now. The Carbon Pack is $10,000 extra, a titanium exhaust is $8,000 (this cuts 22 pounds from the overall mass) and a six-speed automatic transmission replaces the standard stick-shift for £2,700.
One in three new Lotus buyers takes up the Lotus Exclusive bespoke program, too. This is a bespoke tailoring service that lets owners choose a more exclusive finish that "combines traditional British craftmanship with the best of modern design".
Supercharged Toyota motor
Powering the 2020 Evora GT is an uprated 3.5-liter supercharged V6 engine (derived from a stock Toyota motor). The 422 horsepower output is combined with 317 lb-ft of torque, for 0-60 mph acceleration in just 3.8 seconds.
The automatic actually has a little extra torque – 332 lb-ft – and runs the same 0-60 mph time. The top speed is a little lower than the manual, though: 174 mph.
Lotus fits standard Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, plus Eibach ultra-light, low-sideload springs and Bilstein dampers. Four-piston AP racing calipers and lightweight two-piece cross-drilled brake discs are also fitted.
There's the safety backup of ESP stability control – with four settings: Drive, Sport, Race and, for the bravest, Off.
The interior is fully trimmed in Alcantara, with contrast stitching: leather is an option. Lotus hasn't forgotten to cut weight inside, either, with a magnesium steering wheel and carbon fiber instrument binnacle and Sparco race seats.
Touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, sat nav, Bluetooth and reverse parking camera are also standard.
Buyers can even choose how many seats they have: the Evora GT comes in two-seat or 2+2 configurations. However, having experienced how little legroom there is in the 2+2, our tip is to stick with the purist two-seater.
We're sure Lotus founder Colin Chapman (motto: 'just add lightness') would approve.
